2026 vehicle-free Wednesdays
In 2026, the Loop Road is closed to motor vehicles all day every Wednesday from May 6 through September 30. It remains open to pedestrians and cyclists during the designated vehicle-free day. This is not the old Wednesday-and-Saturday morning schedule that appears in some outdated travel articles.
Parking is limited on vehicle-free days, and the National Park Service recommends considering an afternoon arrival to avoid the heaviest morning demand. Only bicycles—including Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes—are allowed with pedestrians on the closed road; scooters and skateboards are not permitted. Bring water, sun protection, a helmet and basic repair supplies. Cell service is unreliable.

What time does the Loop Road close?
The durable rule is sunrise to sunset rather than a single year-round clock time. Daylight changes throughout the year, and the park can adjust access when conditions require it. Begin early enough that you are not racing the final miles as daylight fades.
A first visit usually takes two to four hours without a long hike. Weekends, summer travel and fall color can produce significant traffic. If you plan to hike Abrams Falls, treat the hike as the day’s main physical activity and leave considerably more time.
Is the campground open?
Cades Cove Campground is open year-round, although only part of the campground operates during winter. Reservations are required and individual loops, services and site availability vary by season. Entrance fees and parking tags
Great Smoky Mountains National Park does not charge an entrance fee. A valid parking tag is required when a vehicle is parked anywhere in the park for more than 15 minutes.
