The Smokies are full of stories, and stories do not always stay neatly inside county lines—or even on the same mountain road. A tale first told near Elkmont may eventually be repeated as a Cades Cove story. A Roaring Fork legend may be folded into a list of haunted places across the park. Rather than flattening them all into one place, it is more interesting to know where each story belongs and what was happening there when it took hold.
Cades Cove: historic valley and community sites
Cades Cove is an 11-mile scenic loop south of Townsend. Its preserved cabins, churches, cemeteries, gristmill, and farm buildings tell the documented story of families who lived in the valley. Tales of lights or apparitions are folklore and personal anecdotes, not verified National Park Service history.
Elkmont: a separate historic district
Elkmont is not in Cades Cove. It developed as a logging community and later as a vacation destination associated with the Appalachian Club and Wonderland Hotel. The National Park Service preserves eighteen cabins connected with the Appalachian Club. Visitors may explore the designated historic area on foot while respecting closures and building restrictions.
Roaring Fork: a scenic drive near Gatlinburg
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is another separate area, reached near Gatlinburg. The 5.5-mile one-way road features mountain streams, forest, historic structures, and trail access. Stories such as the legend of Lucy are regional folklore; they are not part of the documented history of Cades Cove.
